Ramaria rubrievanescens Marr & Stuntz Fruit body 7-15cm high, 6.5-10cm wide, numerous branches arising from a massive stem and curving inwards, branching up to five times, lower branches very short and broad, tips of branches rounded or blunt; yellowish white with tips flushed shell-pink only when young, then becoming white or creamy in age. Base 35-90 X 25-50mm, single, cylindrical or cone-shaped; milk-white discoloring yellowish, bruising brownish violet. Flesh firm when fresh, becoming hard; whitish. Odor faintly sweet. Taste faintly nutlike. Spores mummy-shaped, ornamented with lines, 11-13 x 4-5.5µ. Deposit light yellow. Habitat under conifers. Occasional. Found in the Pacific Northwest. Season September-November. Edibility not known -avoid, many Ramarias can cause stomach upset. Comment One of the most striking ramarias to find. |
